The connection between the Pannonhalma Abbey and wine – with greater or lesser interruptions – is now a thousand years old. The Romans began grape growing on the wide, gentle, sunny hillsides of Pannonhalma, and the Benedictine monks continued it since its foundation in 996. According to the 13th-century census commissioned by Béla IV and compiled by Master Albeus, archdeacon of Nyitra, the abbey had twenty significant wine-producing estates, not only in the surrounding Écs, Nyúl, Tényő and Ravazd, but also in the Balaton Uplands and Somogy. Viticulture became the main occupation of the region.
